Starting in August 2024, Portuguese citizens and foreigners residing in Portugal with a tax identification number (NIF) will be able to visit 37 museums, monuments, and palaces free of charge for 52 days per year, any day of the week.
Portugal believes that ‘investing in culture is investing in knowledge, information, and citizenship. Culture, which is essential for understanding the past and building the present, awakens our senses, stimulates creativity, and fosters critical thinking.’
Visiting national museums and buildings offers opportunities to deepen this knowledge by enjoying the spaces and stories they hold, as well as accessing the diverse artistic expressions that make up Portugal’s museum and building cultural programmes.
This alone makes moving to Portugal a worthwhile option.
For example, the National Palace of Mafra (Palácio Nacional de Mafra) in Mafra, just outside Lisbon, costs 15 euros for admission, but Portuguese residents can enter for free.
Being able to visit such a large palace for free is a great help, and it makes you want to visit again and again.

Please see here for a list of 37 places you can visit.
