Óbidos, known as the “Pearl of the Valley”, is a small historic town enclosed by fortified walls.
It is a town I would urge you to visit if you come to Portugal.

From Lisbon to Óbidos, one hour and ten minutes by bus

You can take a direct bus from Lisbon.

From Lisbon, you can board at Campo Grande. Here.

It might be a bit tricky for first-timers to find, but location-wise it’s just west of Campo Grande.

The fare is €9.25.
Payment is cash only; a €20 note was refused. Please prepare €10 or exact change. I suspect they only have small change available.

Please check the official bus timetable and fares here.

Óbidos, known as the ‘Pearl of the Valley’

After an hour and ten minutes on the bus, you arrive.

Óbidos is protected by long walls, where a beautiful landscape awaits that feels like stepping back in time to the Middle Ages. Houses with whitewashed walls and blue or yellow trim line the streets, while cobbled alleys and flowers bursting from window sills create a picture-book charm that is simply delightful.

You can walk the entire perimeter of the ramparts, but it’s rather frightening. You can walk feeling your life is in danger…
When passing others, you end up walking right at the edge of the cliff, so it’s best not to bring large luggage.
I was saying ‘scary’ as I passed people.

The city walls, while daunting, offer breathtaking panoramic views of Obidos from every vantage point. It is well worth the walk, provided you take care.

Shopping in Óbidos

In Óbidos, you’ll find many items that are a bit milder or cuter compared to those in Lisbon.

It’s a recommended town for those who, after exploring Lisbon, wish to encounter charming things.

That’s how popular chocolate is in this town.

You really must visit Óbidos Chocolate House!!
Here, you can sample chocolates handmade by artisans. You can even see where they’re actually being made. The shop itself is dedicated to chocolate-making.

Chocolate that looked like nothing I’d ever seen before.

The tiramisu I shared with my wife. The most delicious I’ve ever tasted… A dish I’d urge you to try if you visit.
